My reflection today is from Fresh Bread:
February is the month of the ‘feast of hearts,’ Valentine’s day. It is a month in which many ‘I love you’s’ are heard and sent and many little red hearts appear everywhere. All the messages and symbols of love lead me to consider one of its aspects – the courageous heart.
The winter with its harsh cold winds in layers of frozen earth leads me to reflect on courage as a wonderful gift of the human spirit. I marvel at how brave the trees and living things must be to stand so well through the winter time. I marvel, too, at people who have come into my life in recent months, people who have that same kind of stamina, people with courageous hearts, people who have the confidence to face the winter of their lives.
It is not until we have faced some winters in our lives, some challenges and struggles, that we are able to know our own courage and are able to understand just how brave we can be when it is necessary to have a courageous heart.” – Joyce Rupp
During this pandemic I have talked with many people who have had many struggles. I never thought about the image of a courageous heart but that is what they have. It’s amazing how after going through a very difficult time, looking back, we are amazed at how we got through the whole situation. Many times it is God carrying us through.?

My reflection today comes from Living Faith:
“A number of years ago, a priest friend and I took a woman suffering from terminal cancer to Lourdes. She was not Catholic but willingly came along. When we arrived, she plunged into the waters and joined us in prayer. Sometime later, she died.
Before she passed, she said to me,’ I am glad I went to Lourdes.’ It was clear that she received a special grace, although not a physical healing as we had hoped.
So many people become angry when they do not get what they want from God. I think it best to repeat the phrase, ‘God gives us what we need, not what we want.’
I believe this woman died in gratitude and hope. God answered her prayers. God answers our prayers. We, too, should be grateful and live, and die in hope.”- Msgr. Stephen J. Rossetti
This certainly fits in with a reflection that I did a while ago about God answering our prayers. I love the statement God gives us what we need, not what we want. Amen

My reflection today:
“Trust your decisions and feelings and do what is best for you. The future will work itself out. Don’t let anyone else’s negativity influence your dreams, values, or hopes. Focus on what you can change and let go of what you can’t. You know your own worth, what you’ve accomplished, and what you’re capable of. Your goals may take a bit longer and be harder to achieve then you had hoped, but… Concentrate on the positives and combine faith with generous portions of patience and determination. Step boldly and confidently into your future where happiness, success, and dreams await you. “ – Barbara Cage
I read once that intuition is really our guardian angel giving us some direction.
I don’t know if that’s true but it does make sense to me.
What I like about this reflection is it combines positive attitude and faith. For me both of those are necessary in life.?

My reflection today:
“Prayer is a way that our hearts can communicate in faith, a way that we can ask questions and receive answers, a way that we can openly express our feelings and concerns. Prayer is a wonderful source of strength for a person, and prayers can become even stronger when we turn to each other for support in prayer. Lean on prayer to help you through difficult times, and know with certainty what the power of prayer can do.” – Susan Hickman Sater
Prayer is so important in our lives. There are times that people have said I prayed for such and such and nothing happened. Jesus taught us in the Our Father, Thy will be done. If what we are praying for does not happen, many times grace is given for us to accept the outcome. Prayer also gives us the time to be in touch with our God and sometimes just the time to be quiet and reflect.?

My reflection today:
“Do what you love
Control your own life
Have imaginative, realistic dreams
Work hard
Make mistakes but learn from them
Believe in yourself but know your limitations
Ignore people who tell you that you can’t
Plow through obstacles and failures
Try to turn your dreams into reality” – Susan Polis Schutz
The only thing I see missing in this reflection is to be in touch with our God within us.?

My reflection today:
“We can’t always be peaceful and loving, even when we have the best intentions. Unexpected events can stimulate fear. Buttons can be pushed. A burst of anger can lead to words we later regret. No emotion is right or wrong. All emotions are natural.
It is so important that we be gentle with ourselves and accept our emotions without judgment, no matter what is going on. Acceptance releases negative energy.
Just knowing that there are times when we are powerless over our feelings can be the beginning of peace. Turning our emotions over to a power greater than ourselves, and trusting that God can and will do for us what we cannot do for ourselves, can bring us peace.” – Ruth Fishel
Today’s reflection, again reminds us how God is present with us at all times.
Many times we just need to stop, and tap into that presence within us.
One thing that this pandemic has taught me is how important reflection time is in my life.
In spite of all that’s going on, I find myself more at peace because I’m taking more time to be in touch with God’s presence within me. ?

My reflection today:
“We can’t always control the people, events, or circumstances that surround us, but we can control the way we choose to react to them. No person or thing has the power to make us angry or scared or frustrated – these are simply ways we choose to respond. Instead of feeling resentful that people don’t always act the way we like or circumstances don’t always unfold as we’d prefer, it helps to focus instead on our inner beings-on becoming more aware of the thoughts and feelings we want to experience.
When we no longer rely on circumstances to make us happy and choose happiness in spite of them, we soon notice the very things we found a objectionable magically fading away. And in their place cascades a glorious deluge of all things deserving and reflective of our good energy.
We can’t always control the world around us, but we can master the one within and create joy and beauty both inside and out.” – Lynn Keachie
In a book John Powell, SJ, shared this story. Sydney was with his friend who stopped to buy a newspaper. The newspaper person was very gruff and nasty. Sydney’s friend smiled and said, “Have a good day!” Sydney said to his friend, “is that person always that way?” He said “Yes.” Sydney said, “Why don’t you go somewhere else?” His friend said, “I am not going to allow him to control my behavior. I am an actor not a reactor.” This fits in quite well with today’s reflection.?

My reflection today:
“Too often discouragement, unhappiness, and stress take a toll on our lives and rob us of the joy we are entitled to. It’s at those times that we must not take the power of prayer for granted; we should stop what we’re doing and focus on God. In stressful times, we should consciously back off from the situation and take a moment to reflect on what’s really important. A conversation with God has a way of putting things in perspective. He often helps us change our attitude, find a solution, or see the humor. God shows us what our talents and gifts are and how to put them to use for our success and peace of mind. God reminds us that mistakes and failures are okay; he helps us learn from them and gives us the confidence to go on. Life can be tough with all its challenges and problems – we get tired and fed up, and sometimes we feel overwhelmed – but it really isn’t all that difficult when you have God… That’s when life is as simple as a prayer.” – Barbara Cage
This is an important reminder of how we really need to stop and communicate with God. Yes the formal prayers are good
But simple prayers during the day are just as meaningful.
“Good morning, Jesus.”
“Oh God, help me get through this.”
“Thank you, Jesus.”
Take time during the day just to touch base with Jesus. I find my days are much better when I take the time to stop and talk to Jesus during the day. Amen

My reflection today:
“Find happiness in nature in the beauty of a mountain in the serenity of the sea
Find happiness in friendship,  in the fun of doing things together,  in the sharing and understanding
Find happiness in your family , in the stability of knowing that someone cares, in the strength of love and honesty
Find happiness in yourself, in your mind and body, in your values and achievements
Find happiness in everything you do” – Susan Polis Schutz
I remember reading the book, Happiness Is an Inside Job. This reflection summed that book up.
Each one of us is responsible for our own happiness. Each one of us could go through the exact same situation and feel something different because it is the way we perceive it.
Let us pause today and reflect and how God wants each one of us to be happy.?

My reflection today:
“The world will not fall apart or leave you behind if you allow yourself a few moments of quiet.
There is no need for stress and struggle. Everything that is meant to be will be – with or without your help.
So relax, find your balance, and remember… breathe.” – Lisa Butler
I guess you realize how true this is as you get older. Let go and let God!
I remember years back when I was principal rushing from one thing to another. Stress would pile up because I would not take the time just to be. As the saying goes… take time to smell the roses, or look at the beauty of the snow and just say thank you God! Amen
