My reflection:
“Today is the beginning of the Lenten fast. A good beginning is important. On Ash Wednesday and the three days afterward the scripture readings focus on prayer, fasting and almsgiving. In Ash Wednesday‘s gospel, Jesus offers advice about the disciplines. Notice that Jesus doesn’t say ‘if you fast. ‘Jesus says ‘when you fast.’
Many Christians struggle with Jesus comand pray, fast and give alms. People want to know how. What are the traditions? How can these be adapted to the way we live now? There is no one right way to keep Lent. Saint Catherine of Siena said that those who practice self denial ‘are happier to see people walking in many different ways then to see just one way.”
Lenten fasting usually means eating and drinking less than usual. During Lent many people eat just one full meal a day. Fasting also includes abstinence. That means not eating certain kinds of foods, such as meat.
The book of Tobit says, ‘Prayer with fasting is good. But better than both is almsgiving with justice. Giving a little to the poor with justice is better than giving a lot with injustice.
In the language of the church, this is called ‘mortification’, which means ‘death to self.’ Mortification is one reason ashes are put on our foreheads at the beginning of the Lenten fast. Ashes are what’s left over after something burns up. For Ash Wednesday the church burns up the palms and branches left from last Palm Sunday. When Lent is nearly over we will have fresh green palms again, and the cycle will be
complete.” Companion to the Calendar
Dear God, I know that you intensely desire to embrace me with your infinite love. I pray for a special grace to open my heart during these forty days and to welcome you in love. Let us remember that our Lenten journey is about coming closer to God each day.?

My reflection:
“The last day before Lent is a weird mix of happiness and sadness. We say goodbye to the joys of winter. We look forward to the coming of Easter. Perhaps the people who keep this day the most wildly are the ones who intend to keep lent the most seriously.
Another task during Carnival was eating up of Lents forbidden foods.
For over a thousand years, most Christians kept Lent by not eating animal products. It’s unusual that a custom would be kept by Christians in both the East and West but that’s how important this tradition was. it probably began out of necessity. The coming warm weather would spoil foods in storage. Also, late winter and early spring are the animals birthing season. By not eating animal products at this time of year, people helped a new generation get off to a healthy start.
Christians thought that by not eating animal products during Lent, they could better resemble Noah and his family aboard the ark. They could help prepare the world for a new creation.
At Carnival all meat, butter, cheese and eggs got used up in a final feast before the Lenten fast. Making pancakes and donuts uses up a lot of these ingredients. In some countries the last day before Lent is called “Doughnut Day” or “Pancake Day”. The Irish call it “Ash Eve”. The French call it Mardi Gras, which means Fat Tuesday.
In Venice, at midnight on Ash Wednesday Eve, a straw figure named Carnivale, whose body has been stuffed with fireworks, is burned in a fire in Saint Marks Plaza. In some places last year‘s Palm Sunday branches are burned with an effigy of old man winter, and so Lent’s ashes get made at the same time that winter burns up.” Companion to the Calendar
However we celebrate today, let us also keep in mind and prayer our brothers and sisters in Ukraine.???

My reflection:
“Sooner or later, many get to the place where there is no medicine for what they need and their only hope is God. Some may say they’ve asked God for help and their condition hasn’t changed or maybe even gotten worse, so now what?
At times like this, it’s important to remember that God is sovereign, and we are not, so we need Him. If we don’t have a relationship with him, we are working with only two-thirds of our potential because we’re body, soul, AND spirit. And since God is a spirit and we’re made in His image (spiritually), we probably need to communicate with Him in that way.
Fortunately, we have the Bible to help us do this. And it tells us that ‘God for His own loving purpose puts both the will and the action into us.’ that scripture is so powerful and changes the emphasis from us to Him. Can you believe Him? If we can surrender to Him, come as children and cast all our cares on Him, it would seem we have freed ourselves from some of the confines of our physical nature and move to where God’s spirit lives… In our heart and soul.” Donna Fargo

My reflection:
“Remember that a wish can take you anywhere- and half the fun is reaching for a star. Your dreams were made to soar; let your spirit dance in every waking moment. Every day comes bearing gifts; hold each promise in your hands. Within you is your very own universe. A bit of stardust is blowing your way-a bit of light and a bit of wonder. Follow your leanings; listen to the whispers of your soul.”Linda E. Knight
God is always within our dreams.

My reflection:
“If we knew how much the habit of being thankful might do for us, I am sure we would take time out every day to count up a few of our blessings. When the spirit of thankfulness takes its place in our consciousness, we radiate life from the very center of our being to the world about us.” Author unknown
Let us pray for an end to the war in Ukraine!

My reflection:
“In your joyous moments, He basks in your praise, thanks, and laughter. When circumstances seem unjust, He hears your pleas. In your times of meditative contemplation, He listens and inspires. when life has dealt a low blow and grief is your constant companion, your cries wrench His heart.
And in those times when you cannot speak, even then God hears your voice.” Cindy B. Stevens

My reflection:
“At times, we can get so caught up in reaching our destination that we forget to appreciate our journey. Life is filled with problems to solve, lessons to learn, and, most of all, experiences to enjoy.
Focus on the journey, and never let a stumble in the road define who you are, where you are going, or how far you have come. It is important to slow down, enjoy life, and know that although the road you travel is yours alone, your present situation is not your final destination.
Sometimes the smallest step in the right direction ends up being the biggest leap of your life.” Eileen Rosenfeld
Let us remember that God is on the journey with us.?

My reflection:
“Use these keys to help unlock any door:
Truth… When you’re honest with yourself and others, you can avoid misunderstandings and save yourself a lot of time.
Patience… Whether you possess it naturally or have to develop it, you need it. It’s a quiet kind of confidence and a reward worth the wait.
Prayer… This is the great balancer. It’s our direct line to God that connects us with His spirit. It is the key to His kingdom. It humbles us and keeps us strong.
Love… It’s the greatest commandment: love God, everyone, and yourself. Faith works by it, and happiness is a result of it. Love makes your life more beautiful.
If you rely on these keys, they will give you the guidance you need to unlock any door.”Donna Fargo
God has gifted us with every one of these keys. Each one of us decides whether we will use them or not…?

My reflection:
Use these keys to help you unlock any door:
“Faith… It is taking God at His word. It’s the step beyond hope. It’s God‘s gift to his children.
Optimism… It’s trusting that you can do whatever you think you can.
Courage… It’s the strength that comes to your rescue when you feel lost or dejected. It’s the kind of bravery that will show you how to overcome disappointment and perform the impossible.
Willingness… Sometimes it’s hard to believe that you can really have what you want, but with a willing mind, you can train your spirit to use its authority to help you reach your every goal.
Imagination… The child within you needs a fantasy place to escape to sometimes, where are you are free to explore your creative spirit without preconceptions.” Donna Fargo

My reflection:
“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. Gratitude makes things right. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. It turns problems into gifts, failures into successes, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. It can turn an existence into a real life, and disconnected situations into important and beneficial lessons. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.” Melody Beattie
Gratitude can really turn our life around. Each day, let us stop and thank God for the gift of life.?
